Botanical Gardens
In the year of 1847 the great Botanical Gardens was laid. Covering an area of around 22 hectares, the Gardens divided into several sections lying on the lower slopes of the Doddabetta peak. John Sullivan, Collector of the district of Coimbatore in 1819 created the botanical garden. Exotic and indigenous species of plant are grown and maintained in the garden. Plants, shrubs, ferns, trees, and herbal plants are housed in the garden. A fossilized tree trunk estimated to be 20 million years old is located in the centre of the Gardens. The Gardens consist of several lawns, ponds with lilies, beds of flowers and ferns laid out in an Italian style, several plots of flowering plants, a variety of medicinal plants.
Coonoor
Coonoor is known for its production of Nilgiri tea. It has an average elevation of 1502 metres (4927 feet). On the south eastern side of the Dodabetta Mountains is the second largest hill station in the Nilgiri hills. This picturesque retreat is covered by grassy meadows, tea bushes, a profusion of sunflowers, marigolds and rhododendrons, all growing wild. The town is physically divided into upper and lower Coonoor. A lovely hill station nestled in the lap of the Nilgiris, Coonoor enchants each and every visitor with its classic scenic beauty.
Dodabetta Peak
The highest mountain in the Nilgiri Hills at 2623 meters is Doddabetta. Around the peak there is a reserved forest area located 4 km southeast of Udagamandalam. From the peak the Chamundi Hills can be viewed clearly. The name "Doddabetta" literally means 'Big Mountain' in Badaga language. The three closely linked heights in the west of the Doddabetta range and nearby Udagamandalam are Hecuba (2375 m.), Kattadadu (2418 m.) and Kulkudi (2439 m.). The observatory has two telescopes which can provide a perfect view of the Mysore plateau and the plains of Coimbatore. The Dodabetta Peak is visited by thousands of visitors and even in the off seasons the place receives quite a number of visitors.
Kalhatty Falls
About 13-km from Udhagamandalam the Kalhatty falls or "Kalahasti Falls" are located on the Kalhatty slopes on the Udhagamandalam - Mysore Kalhatty ghat road. Panthers, Bisons, Wild Buffaloes, Wild Dogs, Spotted Deers, Sambars and different types of hill birds are seen around the waterfalls. All sorts of animals like Panthers, Spotted Deer and Bisons are attracted by the water falls in the early hours of the day and at night.
Kotagiri
The oldest and the third largest hill stations in the Nilgiris is Kotagiri. The climate of the place is claimed to be one of the best in the World. The house of the Kotas is the literally meaning of the hill station Kotagiri. Kotagiri was used as the summer resort of the British. At an elevation of 1985 m. the town has developed around numerous knolls and valleys. The Kotagiri weather is more bracing than that of Coonoor and balmier than that of Ooty.
Madumalai wildlife sanctuary
The Mudumalai National Park is main established to reserve Mudumalai Tiger. The wild park is lies on the northwestern side of the Nilgiri Hills about 80 km north-west of Coimbatore on the interstate boundaries with Karnataka and Kerala. Carnivores include the Dhole, tiger, lepord, the Striped Hyena, the Golden Jackal and the Sloth Bear. The Asian Elephant are also present in hundred of numbers. Tropical moist deciduous, tropical dry deciduous and southern tropical thorn are seen in the area of the wild park. Tropical moist deciduous forest occurs in the western Benne Block, where rainfall is higher than in the other blocks.
Ooty Lake
Ooty Lake is a very popular tourist spot in Ooty. Ooty Lake is an artificial lake that owes its construction to the first Collector of Ooty, John Sullivan. The famous Ooty Lake stretches, in an irregular 'L' shape, for about two kilometers in length. At the far end is the Boat House where all kinds of boats are available for hire from eight in the morning to six in the evening. In recent years the lake and the boat house have become the hub of entertainment for the visitors. It is the best place for boating and the summers are primly wonderful. Several boat races are conducted and people have a wonderful time enjoying the sport as such a wonderful place on earth. The lake and the boat house are the hub of entertainment for the visitors.
