Mussoorie Hill Station
Mussoorie, famous as the 'Queen of the Hills', besides the beautiful viewpoint and splendour, the weather will be refreshing, the climate hygienic. The hill station, Mussoorie is located at an average elevation of 1,826 metres (5,991 ft). Mussoorie, with its green hills and varied flora & fauna, is a fascinating hill resort. Commanding snow ranges to the north-east, and glittering views of the Doon Valley & Shiwalik ranges in the south, the town presents a fairyland atmosphere to the tourists. Cascading waterfalls, the woods in the neighborhood and grassy slopes, all add up to the beauty of Mussoorie as a must visit Hill Station in India.
In the early, the only access to reach Mussoorie was through 11 km trek from Rajpur either on horse back or on a `dandi` carried by porters. The tiredness of the journey was quickly forgotten on reaching the peaceful spot. major Hindu pilgrimage sites like Kedarnath, Badrinath, Gangotri, Yamunotri, Haridwar, Rishikesh are not far from this place.
The name, Mussoorie is derived from plants of 'Mussoorie' which were found in abundance here. After its discovery, this hill station gradually developed as a centre of education, business, tourism and beauty. Mussoorie is a lovely hill resort in the state of Uttaranchal. It is like a picture right out of your dreams! A paradise spread over a vast carpet of greenery coupled with a rich variety of flora and fauna, a breathtaking view of the snow capped mountains and a town buzzing with activity marks a perfect destination for a memorable holiday.
Mussoorie is carefree, friendly and cosmopolitan hill station. Mussoorie also caters, to the sporting obsession. The Polo grounds hold annual tournaments; the rink stages boxing tournaments while at Savoy there is a Dog show every September. In summer, the Happy Valley Club, with 19 courts, holds tennis matches.
The hilly people of Mussoorie are simple and strong, they live in tiny villages scattered over the surrounding hills. These people are cheery and honest, and their main occupation is agriculture. Their houses are built of cut rocks roofed with heavy beams strong to stand the winter snows. Almost overnight, Mussoorie has become one of the most popular hill stations in Northern India famous for its intrinsic picturesque beauty and carefree social life.
Summers (April to June) in Mussoorie remain very favorable. Because of its high altitude, the hill resort escapes the extreme heat of summer season. The temperature rises to a maximum of 30oC and the minimum temperature is recorded at 10oC during this season. Generally winters (late October to mid- February) in Mussoorie are very cold and spine-chilling. The mercury level may drop down to a minimum of 1oC during the nights. Days remain slightly foggy, with the sun being mild and placid. The place experiences heavy downpour during the monsoon season (July to September). It makes the roads unsuitable for trekking and driving.
Mussoorie is conveniently connected by road to Delhi and major cities. It is called the "Gateway" to Yamunotri and Gangotri Shrines of Northern India. The closest rail station is Dehradun. Taxis are easily available for Mussorie as are buses at regular intervals. Mussoorie is an excellent respite for tourists and people who want relief from the hot sultry conditions of the plains.

The best time to visit is from mid-March to mid-November though the downpours could be an inhibiting factor in the monsoon months of July to September.
