Auli Hill Station - Himalayas
Auli is a serene hill station and a ski resort in Uttarakhand and has one of the best slopes in the world facilitating Himalayan Trekking. Auli is nestled in the lap of snow-capped peaks of the Garhwal Himalayas and near the world-famous religious shrine of Badrinath. It offers good treks to nearby places and is a good ski resort from November - March depending on snowfall.
A magnificent view of the Himalayan ranges and excellent slopes covered in soft snow can be viewed. The ropeway from Joshimath to Auli is one of the longest in India covering a distance of 4.15 km. The Auli slopes, descending from 3049 Mtrs to 2915 Mtrs are flanked by conifers and oaks which cut wind velocity to the minimum. The landscape of Auli is a visual treat with the Nanda Devi peak standing tall amongst the mountains facing the snowy slopes. The Hathigauri, Neelkanth, Comet and Eravath mountains present a spectacular panoramic view from Auli. The area offers splendid trekking routes to adventure lovers.
The skiing center was set up in Auli in 1984. The Uttar Pradesh State Government has a branch called Garhwal Mandal Corporation which runs this center. Professionally trained people have been employed for teaching. This spot was discovered by the Indian Army which was posted on the Tibetan border.
The 180 degree view from the top of Auli is mindboggling. The GMVN Guest house and Log huts are reasonably good, and the Tourism Deppt also offers courses in ski ing etc. The people of Auli are nice and warm and are very helpful. From here one can also go to the Valley of Flowers and to Hemkund sahib, the Sikh Gurudwara is located in hemkund sahib. Guru Gobind Singh in his previous birth performed prayers here for LORD and SHAKTI.
There are many scenic and interesting spots around Auli. Joshimath, also called Jyotirmath is the site of one of the four religious centers established by the Hindu religious saint Adi Shankara. From joshimath near Auli one can visit BADRINATH holy seat of hindus this ancient temple made of AKHROT wood is devoted to Lord VISHNU the creater of this universe. There are hot water sulphur springs in BadriNath.
Also on the banks of lake near hemkunt is ancient temple belonging to LAKSHMAN brother of Lord RAM,it is perhaps only temple of Lakshman.lakshman had to perform Prayers to save himself from curse after some scuffle with RISHI DURVASA on the last day of LORD RAM on this earth.
The Auli slopes, descending from 3049 Mtrs to 2915 Mtrs are flanked by conifers and oaks which cut wind velocity to the minimum. Adding to the thrill of skiing is a 180 degrees view of Himalayan peaks which include Nanda Devi, Kamet, Manaparvat and Dunagiri. Before Auli was a ski resort, it was used for training the army men and the personnel of the Indo Tibetan Border Police (ITBP).
The best time to visit Auli is during winters (Dec-Feb). This is the time when one can enjoy the snowfall in Auli. Auli will also host the SAF winter games in Feb 2009.
